The 50/50 Experience

// Wed May 10th, 2006 / 22:00 h / Total 84:00

100 years of experimental film from the futurists to post-media-art! A programme of two curators suffering the same fate. Radically shortend, it represents 50 years of commom experience and their inside views on the being - and the mischief - of media art. Short revue of a quarter of a century of avantgarde cinema in Osnabrück!

Fascination

// Thu May 11th, 2006 / 12:00 h
/ Repetition: Cinema Arthouse Kino 5 / Sat May 13th, 2006 / 22:30

Meta-Bio-Pic on the Canadian forerunner of the video scene and icon of the drag scene. Colin Campbell's death in 2001 left a large gap in Toronto's artist community. He was magnanimous, productive and attractive, a pioneer in the germinating field of video art, creating the most hilarious figures in his 31-year career: Art Star, Robin, the wife of Malibu and Colleena. He melted the world of performance with that of the video world, producing an endless amount of reels that are witty and cunning at the same time – shrill snapshots on the reflective function of video in an age of surplus media production.

CAST AND AWAY

Exoticore

// Thu May 11th, 2006 / 13:30 h / Total 63:00

Banished and forgotten: society has its own unwritten laws. Even if we appear to treat the handicapped, coloured and other minorities on an equal basis in public, we soon lose sight of them in private (›Film for Tom‹, ›Fountain‹). But if they really do want to be themselves, we react with incomprehension and resistance because they then violate our good customs (›Exoticore‹). Only others who recognise their being different, reflect upon it and are aware of it can exist in our society (›The Wallraff Method‹).

Antipodes

// Thu May 11th, 2006 / 15:00 h / Total 66:00

An antipodal trip around the world in 66 minutes. Shanghai, Rotterdam, Marrakech, Lofoten, Taipei, Copenhagen, Eastern Europe, Damascus. In these three films the camera becomes a diary, visualising in very different ways the impressions and observations that flow into one another and the atmospherically compressed emotional states of the trip between loss of orientation and curiosity, the visual-haptic discovery of a strange place, its people and symbols.

Waiting for Felipe

// Thu May 11th, 2006 / 20:00 h / Total 59:00

They all talk to each other, constantly, everywhere and jumbled up. The dilemma of personal communication is limitless. Men and women simply don't mean the same thing (›Making Pancakes‹, ›Heinrich und Mary Jane‹), the whore and the john don't understand each other either (›Jetzt: Das geistesverwirrte Callgirl‹). Even the body language is unclear and a feast for the spontaneous voyeur (›Traffic‹, ›Waiting for Felipe‹). Pleasure Zone

// Thu May 11th, 2006 / 23:30 h / Total 66:00

As a homage to the blissful month and the series of gay events in May, we present a programme of the 'other' kind. It tells of secret meetings on park benches (›Still‹), extravagant residents in the mega cities (›Permanent Residents‹), of working as naked cleaners (›Filth‹, ›Job Interview‹) and of a girl's coming out, when she unexpectedly finds the love of her life on holiday. And when the lesbian Pussypackers meet the Masturbaturs, the evening of sport is saved (›Pleasure Zone‹).

ARCHITECTURE OF THE FUTURE

My Barrio

All people is plastic

// Fri May 12th, 2006 / 12:00 h / Total 65:30

The city of the future as a filmic utopia. It is eerie, dismissive, ravaged by concrete and standardised. Structurally planned down to the very last detail, covered by grid lines and fully surveillable. Each individual relation to one's own district or to nature is regulated by the kit of the modern age (›Domino‹, ›My Barriov‹, ›All people is plastic‹) and every human movement is controlled by the rhythm of the traffic (›Kwalitetstrafik‹, ›Train Tower‹). // Fri May 12th, 2006 / 13:30 h / Total 72:30

Similar to a diary, the photo album unites the visual impressions and memories of special experiences, journeys, places and phenomena. But unspectacular and everyday occurrences or uniformly flowing events are entered into the image memory: ›10 Years in River‹ shows the course of a Lithuanian river in ten sections spanning ten years or ›Gedreven door Wind‹, which documents the everyday life of one of Holland's last windmillers with a smooth camera. ›Géographie Imaginaire‹ also touches on the exotic in everyday life in a similar manner, depicting an Arabic wedding ceremony from the personal perspective of a German/Tunisian artist.

// Fri May 12th, 2006 / 15:00 h / Total 60:00

This is about flowers in general, as well as in a special sense. What is important to some: garden, landscape, nature, growth; blooming or dying flowers (›Bouquets‹, ›Halbmond für Margaret‹), is a thorn in another's side (›A Time to Die‹). The third kind have never escaped from the flower power age and its body of thought (›Whispering Pines‹) or have long since arrived in the paradise of love (›Knospen wollen explodieren‹).

Abendmahl

// Fri May 12th, 2006 / 18:30 h / Total 67:00

Besides the colourful, digitised, new visual worlds

there is another antique form of image processing

and treatment that is based on mechanical and optic

techniques and structures. The films of the

Lumières and the avant-garde live on in this form

of work. This does not just restrict us to material

films à la Brakhage (›Endless‹, ›Interlude‹,

›Harrachov‹, ›Abendmahl‹), aspects of surreal,

dadaist cinema can also be sensed (›The influence of... ‹,

›Dr. Garibaldi‹). What is interesting in any case is

that especially young generation film-makers are occupying

themselves with the material of film and the aspects

of how to process it.

Alfred Hitchcock sends his regards, in many respects. It's not only that he seems to appear on several occasions (›Looking for Alfred‹), also his films are taken as a foundation (›Where I Go‹) or at least his plots are adapted (›Satisfied Mind‹). Conspiracy theories and obscure connections are revealed (›Murder and UFOs‹, ›desi're‹, ›Sexorzist‹), making us ask whether it all amounts to brainwashing and exchangeable bodies or shells (›Cosmetic Energy‹, ›Zwirn‹).

SIEBEN HIMMEL

// Fri May 12th 2006 / 23:30 h / Total 92:00

›Sieben Himmel‹ is a fantastic cinematic work of art. A drama that
consummately plumbs the limitations of the medium and demands
unconditional participation from the audience. A film such as ›Sieben
Himmel‹ must seem to be outmoded, even though it has so much to do
with the misfortune of its age, because only then can a distance be
produced that guarantees a new way of looking at the world, which is
even suspicious of the idea of transcendence. ›Sieben Himmel‹ does not
offer any solutions but represents a hope: a short, tempting sparkle
in the roaring ocean of the media world. It's worth looking out for
it. (Marcus Stiglegger)

Collision

// Sat May 13th, 2006 / 18:30 h / Total 70:00

What has football got to do with war? What has the media got to do with total surveillance by camera? Conflict prevention or control in everyday life presents itself as a distinguished task of the state. Since conflicts often begin on a small scale it appears advisable to have total surveillance. But what if the surveillance machinery itself starts to attack? To what extent can people be manipulated and to what extent can repression mechanisms work, this is what is asked in ›Wir sind Dir Treu‹, ›A Day to Remember‹ and ›Echo‹. The fact that everything is justifiable and theoretically derivable can be experienced in ›The Form of the Good‹. How we have learned to cope with this in our everyday lives is knowledge belonging to the elderly (›Because of the War‹) or we learn bit by bit at home (›Homefront‹).

Different countries, different customs: a look at the landscapes and circumstances of foreign people's preferred methods of how to spend their leisure time. It may not sound particularly unusual to learn that there are competitions for building igloos, but it does sound rather strange to hear about golf being played on ice (›Tales from the Arctic Circle‹). An enormous amount of archive material tells us about the effects the melting of the Arctic ice has on the rest of the world (›Ice/Sea‹). ›The Black Ring‹ clearly shows us how survival in some of today's so-called transformation countries will nevertheless still be possible.

Fossilization

// Sun May 14th, 2006 / 15:00 h

What can the eyes process or to what extent can we believe our eyes? We are quick to recognise film tricks, even if what we see continues to baffle the brain (›Vertigo‹, Fossilization‹). But when a conventional film (strip) is processed, cut up and put back together again, turning something familiar into a new visual dimension (›The Fence‹, ›Instructions for...‹, ›Pan‹), this borders on filmic alchemy; and when a short tube journey is transformed into a visual dream voyage through the visual universe (›Yamanote Lightblast‹, ›Gate Vision‹), that is classed as magic.

// Sun May 14th, 2006 / 18:00 h / Total 65:00

A popular scenario – what happens on the renowned day after. There have always been days following catastrophes, wars, etc., as well as days leading up to them! This is demonstrated by, for instance, ›Blow Up‹, which explores the region following the assassinations on the London tube; also ›Sarin‹ and ›Soman‹ refer to people's attempts to decimate humanity with the assistance of poison. ›Sea Change‹ gives us an idea of what a landscape could look like on the day after.
