Besides the colourful, digitised, new visual worlds
there is another antique form of image processing
and treatment that is based on mechanical and optic
techniques and structures. The films of the
Lumières and the avant-garde live on in this form
of work. This does not just restrict us to material
films à la Brakhage (›Endless‹, ›Interlude‹,
›Harrachov‹, ›Abendmahl‹), aspects of surreal,
dadaist cinema can also be sensed (›The influence of... ‹,
›Dr. Garibaldi‹). What is interesting in any case is
that especially young generation film-makers are occupying
themselves with the material of film and the aspects
of how to process it.

Three prizes are given away this year: the € 2500.- EMAF-Award for a pioneering work in media art, the German Film Critique Award for Best German Experimental Film of the Year, and the prize of the foreign office for intercultural dialogue.
